I knew when I walked in that it was a perfect fit. I love this place!"

Board President

Sharon Hill

I discovered Unity in Virginia Beach in 1983, where taking classes and volunteering became one of my greatest joys. When we moved to North Carolina in 2001, I joined Unity Church of Raleigh. Among other volunteer service, I was a Chaplain for two years and joined the Board in 2005, which included being a part of the Ministerial Search Committee and Education Committee as well as interim Secretary and, now Vice President. My husband, Tom Sherry, and I enjoy our blended family of adult children, Chris, Jennifer and Megan, and high school senior and active YOUer, Sarah. Our crazy dog, Jasmine, is beloved by all! My other passions include gardening, painting, and international travel. With a background in Art Education and Educational  Administration with an undergraduate degree from Ohio State University and advanced degrees from Arizona University I’m an Assistant Professor and Gallery Outreach Director at Meredith College in Raleigh.

Vice President

Melanie Raskin

I’m a writer and television actress, running my own business communications company in Chapel Hill since 1987. I began visiting Unity Church of Raleigh in 1987. I’ve been a member since the turn of the century. I serve the church as an usher, bookstore cashier, Care Committee member, and now, as bookstore volunteer coordinator. I love being a part of this spiritual community. A Radio, Television, Motion Picture-Writing alumna of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I’ve lived in Chapel Hill with my wonderful husband, Jeff, since 1985. I enjoy my cat, Snap; cooking; writing fiction; traveling; reading; movies; spending time with friends and family; having fun with our nieces and nephews; knitting, and volunteering at the Carrboro Farmers Market.

My family and I moved here almost 4 years ago from Denver, Colorado, to be closer to Suzanne’s family and to begin a new chapter in our lives. We bought a home in Fuquay Varina and have settled in nicely. We have 2 beautiful and spirited children, Larson (4) and Skyler (2). With both of us working full-time, we definitely lead busy lives, but we love every minute of it! We are truly blessed!

I work in the exciting world of IT as the Sales Manager for WorkSmart, a Durham-based full-service IT solutions provider, serving the needs of small- to mid-sized companies, schools and nonprofits throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. I absolutely love my career! I get to be surrounded by very smart people and I truly enjoy consulting with companies to provide for their IT needs.

Suzanne and I discovered Unity while living in Boulder, Colorado. We attended Unity Church of Boulder and loved the message, the principles and the movement. After moving to the Triangle it took us about a year before we started attending UCR regularly (right around the time Reverend Deborah joined us). We definitely have found our spiritual home at UCR, and offer our time, talents and treasure, accordingly.

At UCR I help run the sound booth and serve as an usher, both of which I am enjoying immensely. Suzanne is active in teaching with the Youth Program. We enjoy participating in the various activities and classes sponsored by UCR.

I’m excited about the prospect of becoming a Board member at UCR for a number of reasons, but primarily for the opportunity to develop a closer relationship with the members of UCR as we create a New Story together!

Secretary

Susan Smith

I was first introduced to Unity by a friend and was immediately drawn to the somplicity, yet richness of the principles. Unity has had a profound impact on my life and has shaped the way I see people and the world around me. I've been attending the Unity Church of Raleigh since 1991 when we were known as "the little purple church." I thoroughly enjoy my service to Unity on the Usher Team and find my Sundays are more complete when I open the doors to greet our members and guests. Professionally, I serve through my work as a pediatric psychologist, assisting children with developmental disabilities. I was lead to my career by Spirit and feel blessed to enjoy what I do. I enjoy all of my life and am particularly fulfiled by the great outdoors, family, friends, cooking, and my lively pup, Abby. I am also a sporths enthusiast who enjoys waterskiing, biking, and running. Being an alumnae from the University of North Carolina, I am a avid and true ble Tar Heel fan!

Board Members

Gay E. Bulterman

I first attended Unity Church in 1996 and became a member the following year. Unity principles are a profound part of my life. I am a greeter and usher and receive great joy in welcoming attendees to our church community. For many years I resided in several countries in Europe and Latin America. Getting to know people of different cultures and beliefs has taught me that we humans have much in common: we are all children of the same creator. At present I am a real estate broker working in a community of new homes in Davis Park in the Research Triangle.
