Laura Dearth

I have been a member of Unity Church of Raleigh since 2000. My husband and I moved to North Carolina from Illinois in 1998 when he accepted a job in the area. I met a person who attended UCR regularly and was intrigued by her peaceful demeanor. She invited me to attend UCR with her. I had not attended any church for years, but when I began coming to services at UCR, I felt like I was where I belonged.

Shortly after joining the church, I became pregnant with twins. They were born in November of 2000. I quit my job as a bookkeeper to stay home with them. I loved being home with my children and spending so much time with them. Instead of going back to work, I spent my time taking care of my family and doing volunteer work.

I have tried out many volunteer opportunities at UCR, but the Sunday School program is the one that resonated with me the most. I started assisting in the Sprouts classroom shortly before my children were old enough to begin attending the Sunday School classes. I have always wanted to be a part of their learning experience--wherever they are. After a few months of assisting in the classroom, there was an opportunity to teach and I have been teaching ever since.

I became the Youth Education Director in October 2010, and have enjoyed leading and supporting others in the program. There is so much opportunity for growth in our program, and I look forward to seeing more children enjoying our classes and our community.
